While the term “Two Solitudes” was originally used to describe the disconnect between Canada’s Anglophone and Francophone communities, it also resonates when considering the invisible barriers that seem to exist between Indigenous and non-Indigenous business. With these barriers built on a foundation of colonialism and racism, despite Canada’s efforts to come to grips with its past, poor communication between First Nation and non-First Nation communities, and a lack of awareness of the opportunities for economic collaboration have left these barriers largely unchallenged. Failing to appreciate how First Nations communities may do business differently, and a fear of approaching an unfamiliar culture have also contributed to the problem. As a First Nations businessman who grew up “off the reserve” Jason Peters has personal knowledge of these ‘Two Solitudes’, and is uniquely positioned to facilitate dialogue between them. Canada’s Aboriginal people are the fastest growing demographic in the country. This growth in population, combined with an increased desire to understand and appreciate Indigenous culture among non-Indigenous Canadians, means that the time is right to promote a new era of collaboration between businesses and First Nations Communities. Jason Peters’ experience as a business leader, paired with his relationships with First Nations communities and his understanding of their economic frameworks mean Nation2Nation Consulting is poised to create a new business trend in the region, and to drive a wave of mutually beneficial economic collaboration.
